Bruins Win District 11-AAA, Beat Rebs 21-20Posted Saturday, October 31, 2009 by Marty Morris ![]() Bruins 21, Rebels 20 Game Notes: This week it was Brentwood's turn to stage a 4th quarter comeback and snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Down 20-14 in the 4th quarter with 6:16 to play, the Bruins were 84 sloppy, muddy yards away from a from a game winning touchdown – and extra point. With the Rebs and the swampy field conditions doing a good job of shutting down the Brentwood running game, Clay Webber took the team on his shoulders and went to work with his arm and his feet. First he converted a critical 3rd down with a pass to Greg Stone (his first reception of the season). Next he used his feet, taking off around left end to pick up a big 1st down out near mid field. Then came a 52-yard strike to Michael Dugan who was not to be denied the end zone leaving Reb defenders in his wake…literally. With the tying touchdown scored, the hopes of the Bruin Nation now rested on the right foot of Brian Davis whose extra point was right down Hillsboro Pike. Brentwood 21, Franklin 20.
But not so fast my friends. After Alex Ford’s kickoff return to the 29 yard line and with 2:26 left to play, there was still life left in the Rebs. It was up to the defense to secure the victory. Franklin hit three quick passes down to Brentwood’s 23 – dangerously close to field goal range. Then Franklin QB Matt Kuivinen connected with Alex Ford on a screen pass, which had been working all night for the Rebs, and Ford took off downfield. But the swarming Bruin defense would have none of it as Chris Hoop and Daniel Hagaman combined to pop the ball loose and Tyson Ashcraft executed a perfect double gainer in the pike position as he dove on the ball in the slop. Bruin’s ball with 50 seconds to go on the Brentwood12 yard line. Give to Jeremy Coffey-timeout Rebels. Give to Jordan Evans-timeout Rebels. Give to Roman Mitchell for a first down and it was time for the best play in football - taking a knee in the victory formation. Game, set, District Title!![]() This year's one point Bruin win brings back memories of the 2004 meeting with the Rebs that was also decided by a missed extra point. Here is picture of #14 Thomas Welch blocking the extra point try that proved to be the margin of victory. He's between #67 Steve Slowey and #81 Kyle Skiera (that's the ball between Steve's raised hands). Thomas is in his senior year at Vanderbilt where he's a starting offensive tackle for the 'Dores. Steve is now on the sidelines as a Bruin assistant coach after playing for Lambuth. Kyle played for Samford and now can be seen on Friday nights in the booth with papa Mike and Corky French keeping stats for the WBHS-9 TV broadcast. It's amazing that anyone could play football under the conditions Friday night. Stepping on the field to celebrate the victory with the team your feet were sucked 2 to 3 inches into the mud - it was like quicksand. Walking was a challenge, can't imagine trying to run in it.
