Freshman Bruins swim past Mustangs, 7-0

Posted Wednesday, October 28, 2009 by Marty Morris
The Freshman Bruins (7-1) capped off their superb 2009 season downing the Mustangs of David Lipscomb High School 7 to 0 in the 2009 Brentwood Bowl. It was not a fit night out for man nor beasts as the rains that held off much of the afternoon came back with a vengence right around kickoff and drenched everyone and everything in sight (except for the 20 or 30 people jammed in the press box).

The Bruins only needed one score to win it thanks to the defense. After a 20-yard Mustang punt, Brentwood started their first drive on the Lipscomb 41 yard line. Eight plays later David Meehan followed his blocks and reached the endzone untouched with 4:22 left to go in the 1st quarter. Blake Chidester nailed his 13th extra point of the year and that was it for scoring for the night. Thanks to the defense, that's all the points that were needed.

Wet conditions like last night's give teams with a power running game a big advantage and Brentwood used its advantage to the fullest. Quarterback Austin Winfree and Fullback David Meehan combined for 25 of the teams 33 carries and 103 of the 114 yards gained, most of them between the tackles. Running backs Austin Pennell, Ben Green, Anthony Hall and Jake Driver also contributed. And lets hear it for the big fellas up front that pave the way without much recognition (except when they false start or hold): Zach Zimmerman, Logan Teichmann, Will Woods, Preston Williams, Jackson Overton, Adam Thetford and Matthew Morris.

The Defense was rock solid all night pitching its first shutout of the season and holding the Mustangs to only 18 yards of total offense for the game. These angry young bears had 9 of their 35 tackles in the Lipscomb backfield as Matthew Reed lead the way with 3 tackles for loss and a sack for a total of -25 yards.  Leading tacklers for the night (5 apiece), Bryan Reynolds (1 interception) and Adam Thetford each had tackles behind the line of scrimmage as did Logan Teichmann, Joey Guarino, Aaron Martinez and J.B. Calton. The Mustangs longest drive of the night was 7 plays, took 4:43 off of the clock but only covered 18 yards and ended in a turnover on downs on their 12-yard line.

Special Teams also contributed allowing only 14 yards of kick returns and holding their punters to a 12.7 yards per punt average. And Blake Chidester's 31-yard field goal attempt, out of Cole Steven's hold sure looked awful close. Great work guys.

It was wonderful way to wrap up an outstanding season. A fitting reward for all of the hard work starting way back in June. Now its time to turn in equipment and head to the weight room. For those who return, there will be a couple of years of hard work playing scout team for the varsity, getting knocked around all week for a shot to play in a Monday night JV game. But now comes the chance to stand on the field under the Friday night lights. The rewards are great in the end as the lessons learned and the bonds made with teammates will last a lifetime.

Great Work Men!
