Bruins 35, Burros 0

GAME NOTES:

It was a dominating effort by the defense - once they settled down. Hillsboro was having some success moving the ball on the ground in the 1st quarter. But as their drives stalled and the Bruins started rolling up the points the Burros had a much tougher time in the air. The defense held the Burros to 55 yards on the ground in 23 attempts for a meager 2.4 yard per carry average.

Not counting quarterbacks Clay Webber and Carson O'Neal, 8 different Bruins had carries. Overall the team posted 230 yards rushing on 38 carries for a 6.1 yard/carry average. As expected Jeremy "Smash" Coffey led the group with 78 yards and 3 touchdowns but Jordan "Dash" Evans made his presence known with 48 yards on just 3 carries.

Austin Johnson is coming on strong for his senior season after missing much of the early part of it recuperating from an injury. He has already returned to his rock-solid work in the defensive backfield, where he has been a starter since sophomore year. Friday night he saw his first offensive action carrying the ball 4 times for 31 yards and hauling in a Clay Weber TD pass in the 2nd quarter to put the Bruins up 14-0. Great work A.J.!

Ahh, its good to be King. Congratulations to Homecoming King and starting center Matt Bridges seen here with Queen Rachel Gregory. Matt's occupation was listed as lumberjack during the halftime ceremonies. Being the team record holder in the bench press means he must save lots of money on saws and blades by pulling the trees out of the ground by hand. There is no finer representative of Team Brentwood than Matt. You make the Bruin Nation proud young man!

This week's opponent, Blackman, suffered its first loss of the season falling to Oakland 14-0. The Blaze are now coached by Philip Shadowens, who led Smyrna to back-to-back state titles in 2006 and 2007. They have been ranked ahead of the Bruins in the Tennessean Midstate poll all season and are now 2 notches below Brentwood  in the number 8 spot behind Franklin. The Bruins lead the series 5-1 but this is a new and improved Blaze team that finally has the coaching to go with the athletic talent that has always been there. They would love nothing more than to beat Brentwood on our senior night just like Oakland did to them last Friday.

With this District 11 victory Brentwood and Franklin are tied for 1st place with Independence 2 games back. With the top 2 6A teams making the playoffs based on district record and the only remaining district game being the Franklin, the Bruins are assured a playoff berth for the 13th straight year. The Bruin/Rebel match in 2 weeks will be important for determining seeding and home field advantage.

Be sure to come out this Friday as we honor our Seniors on their last regular season home game against Blackman. And Senior moms and dads, make sure to bring the hankies on this very emotional night.

The Tennessean didn't cover the game but CLICK HERE  for a great write-up on the BrentwoodHomepage.com site.
