Freshman fall to Cougars 21-16Posted Friday, October 16, 2009 by Marty Morris The Freshmen Bruins get the first blemish on their record falling to the Dickson County Cougars on a cold wet drizzly night in Dickson yestereday. The cubs gave it their all but came up just short when a potential game winning pass from the Cougar 36 fell incomplete as time expired.
The Bruins led almost all of the statistical categories including time of possession (25 minutes to 15), first downs and total yards. But twice Brentwood was inside the DC 10 yard line and came away with no points. This includes a 16 play 75-yard drive that lasted all but 11 seconds of the 3rd quarter. Brentwood got on the scoreboard first thanks to a J.B. Calton 11-yard punt return to the Cougar 42 yard line. Austin Winfree scored on the Bruin's fourth attempt from the 1 yard line and Blake Chidester added the extra point to make it 7-0 Bruins. Dickson County responded on their next possession covering 65 yards in 11 plays to tie it at 7-7. Blake Chidester took the ensuing kickoff 52 yards to the DC 37 as Brentwood answered right back. On the first play from scrimmage Jake Driver swept around right end down to the Cougar 3 yard line but the Bruins stalled and settled for Blake Chidester's first field goal of the season. That made it 10-7 Bruins at the half. Brentwood took the 2nd half kick off and used up 9:49 on the clock but turned the ball over on downs on the DC 28 yard line. Dickson County needed just 3 plays to score and take the lead 14-10 thanks to runs of 28 and 43 yards. The Bruins couldn't get anything going offensively and after turning the ball over on downs for the 3rd time the Cougars needed only 1:20 to cover 57 yards (including a 43-yard rush) to go up 21-10. The Bruins refused to give up though. With 2:40 left to go and down 11 points, the special teams took charge as Anthony Caldwell reeled in the Cougar kickoff and found a seam in the coverage and streaked 82 yards for his 1st TD of the season, 21-16 DC. The onside kick attempt was recovered by DC but the Brentwood defense got its first stop since the first quarter and forced them to punt. Brentwood had the ball on their 32 with 1:14 to go and no time outs. Austin Winfree connected with J.B. Calton tor 9 yards and Jake Driver converted a 4th and 1 with a 2-yard carry for a first down to keep the Bruin hopes alive. It was a big night for Jake, who had 100 yards rushing and a 27-yard reception on a 4th and 16 to move the ball to the DC 32. With 5 seconds left Austin Winfree heaved a bomb into the end zone as time expired but the pass fell incomplete stopping the win streak at 6 games. Now its time to wait and see if a Bowl Game will come about. If not its time to hit the weights and get ready for spring practice. |
