Freshmen stay perfect, down Cougars 33-19Posted Thursday, October 01, 2009 by Marty Morris Freshmen stay perfect, Down Centennial 33-18
The Freshman Bruins improved their record to a perfect 5-0 with a 33-18 victory over the Centennial Cougars in Franklin last night. The cubs survived a vicious aerial assault from the Cougars who passed on 33 of their last 38 plays. Brentwood showed a little passing ability too when QB Austin Winfree found Sam O’Rourke down the right sideline and hit him with a 14-yard strike - Brentwood’s first TD pass of the season.
Centennial switched to the all passing attack after they tried 3 rushing attempts on their first possession that netted them minus 16 yards. It was quite a work out for the defensive secondary who saw more passes in this game (33) than they have seen in the previous 4 games (28). Much of success of the passing attack can be attributed to the skill of Cougar QB Kyle Brennen who constantly found the open receiver in the clutch situation. He will be one to watch in the future.
Brentwood jumped out to a 13-0 lead when Austin Pennell scored his second TD of the year on a 9 yard sweep around left end. The Cougars covered 62 yards on passes for their 1st score and turned a failed punt attempt into a short field score to close the gap to 13-12 at the half. The Bruins stayed the course grinding out a 56-yard drive (thanks to a Blake Chidester 40-yard kick return) capped with a 3-yard TD smash by David Mehan. Ben Green added his first TD of the season to put the Bruins up 26-12 and the Bruins never looked back. The Brentwood secondary rallied in the second half intercepting Brennen twice to shut down drives. David Mehan snagged one in the endzone to snuff out a 61-yard drive and Ryan England robbed one with 10 seconds to go to end it for Centennial. The Cougars final TD came on a 4th and 5 from the Bruin 20. The Bruins added some more insurance when Austin Winfree bulled in from the 6 to finish a 4 minute 46 second 10 play drive in the 4th quarter.
Great job gentlemen. Now its time to get ready for our friends to the south, Frankburg, who come calling next Thursday to James C. Parker Stadium. Freshman Parents mark your calendar to be there early for our Tailgate party starting around 5pm. |
